GLADSTONE Ports Corporation (GPC) has appointed the head of the Bureau of Meteorology as its new chief executive.

In a statement, GPC said Andrew Johnson was appointed after “a rigorous and comprehensive search process”.

Mr Johnson has more than 30 years of national and international leadership experience in Australia and overseas, including almost a decade at the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

GPC chair Maree Adshead said Andrew Johnson had a strong reputation.

“This appointment is fundamental to the Board’s focus on strengthening GPC’s core business, ensuring long-term stability and delivering results,” Ms Adshead said.

“Andrew brings extensive experience leading large, multi-asset, multi-jurisdictional, complex operations. Andrew is the right person for the job and we are so pleased to welcome him to Gladstone.”

Ms Adshead said Mr Johnson’s priority would be to work closely with customers, partners, employees and stakeholders.

“GPC is a world-leading multi-commodity port focused on ensuring the future prosperity of our community and state – Andrew’s significant national and international experience will ensure we continue to deliver value to Queensland,” Ms Adshead said.

Andrew Johnson is to join GPC in September after finishing his job as chief executive of the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), where during the last nine years he was credited with leading significant organisational transformation and technology uplift.

Before joining the BoM, Mr Johnson spent almost a decade on the executive team of CSIRO.

This included supporting the management of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, land and water management in northern Australia and the development of the unconventional gas sector.

He was also credited with delivering major technology, infrastructure and construction programs in Australia and overseas, including ship building in Singapore, the development of technology precincts in Townsville and Brisbane and one of the largest civilian IT programs in the Australian Government.

Jenelle Druce is to continue as acting chief executive until Andrew Johnson starts on 22 September 2025.

Andrew Johnson is to be first formal chief executive formal CEO since Craig Haymes quit a year ago.

Since that time, Kim Gebers and Jenelle Druce have both served as acting CEOs.
