The NT EPA has proposed tighter limits on hot venting, continuous monitoring requirements and enhanced reporting obligations for both Inpex and Santos.
The Ichthys LNG plant is one of the largest industrial operators on Darwin Harbour, supporting LNG exports, offshore supply chains and tug and pilotage activity.
The prosecution signals a significant escalation in regulatory scrutiny of harbour‑based industrial operations, with potential implications for compliance costs, monitoring systems and future licence renewals.
Minister Burgoyne said the NT Government is also progressing legislation to establish a new air‑quality monitoring scheme, aimed at improving transparency around industrial emissions and providing the community with more accessible information on air‑quality conditions in the Darwin region.
He said the NT EPA’s decision to prosecute demonstrated that the regulator “is working appropriately, to protect the environment and the broader community of the NT”.
Ichthys LNG has not publicly commented on the charges. The case will proceed through the Darwin Local Court, where the company faces multiple counts of alleged under‑reporting. Each offence carries potential financial penalties under NT environmental law.
