Inland Rail CEO quits

INLAND Rail chief executive Nick Miller has left the company to take up a new role as chief executive at John Holland Group. 

In a statement, the company praised Mr Miller for helping establish Inland Rail as a subsidiary of the Australian Rail Track Corporation since taking over in December 2023. 

This was said to be in line with one of the recommendations of the independent review of Inland Rail. 

“As CEO of Inland Rail Mr Miller progressed the project to being in construction in every section between Beveridge and Parkes by mid-2025, with several key environmental approvals for NSW projects secured under his tenure,” the Inland Rail statement read. 

Mr Miller has previously talked of the importance of Inland Rail for sustainable transport. 

“It is about nation building. It is about connecting the freight link from Melbourne to Brisbane,” he said in an interview a year ago. 

“That’s not just about freight, it is about improving road safety to improving sustainability.”

Mike Zambelli has been appointed as Inland Rail interim CEO, with work to appoint a replacement to begin shortly. 

Mr Zambelli has been the chief operating officer at Inland Rail for 15 months and previously was the group executive for the Major Construction Projects group in ARTC for three years. 

The board, executive and Inland Rail staff are strongly focused on continuing the delivery of the project and building on the strong momentum that has been created over the past 18 months,” the Inland Rail statement read.
