SECURING regional supply chains will be high on the agenda when infrastructure and transport minister Catherine King visits China this week.
Ms King is travelling to attend the 21st session of the APEC Transportation Ministerial Meeting and is to meet with her ministerial counterparts in Beijing to discuss priorities and cooperation for transport systems across our region.
The minister is to also meet with her Chinese ministerial counterpart Minister Liu Wei.
According to a Chinese government statement, the Australian government remained “committed to a stable and constructive relationship with China, which is in the interests of both of our countries”.
Ongoing dialogue and forums such as APEC would help ensure collaboration and connectivity across member countries and within the Asia and Pacific region, the statement read.
“The APEC Transport Ministerial Meeting will help further align regional transport standards and secure supply chains across our region,” Ms King said.
“Australia is a proud founding member of APEC, a vital forum in ensuring the growth and prosperity of our region.
“I look forward to engaging in constructive debate with my counterparts whilst in Beijing.”
APEC 2026 is expected to include several senior officials’ meetings, including on such topics as women and the economy, trade, tourism, forestry, and food security.
According to a statement from China’s deputy foreign minister Ma Zhaoxu, more than 300 meetings and events are being held in more than 10 cities across China, with close to 7,000 participants.
“Through in-depth exchanges, we have further built consensus on and initially outlined the main pillars for building an Asia-Pacific community, and injected new momentum into regional economic integration,” Minister Ma said.
He said that in a time of AI and new drivers of growth were gaining momentum, the Asia-Pacific, as the anchor of global stability and the engine of growth.
