“Our regional communities generally have a high level of interest in what’s happening at our ports, but when vessels such as the Crown Princess cruise in, there are certainly a few more people keen to see what’s going on.
“The history and beautiful natural landscapes of Albany are a terrific introduction to the Great Southern region and cruise passengers often leave wanting to come back for more.”
The Crown Princess is visiting Albany for the third consecutive year and will continue north to Busselton, Fremantle and Broome after departing at 4pm on Friday.
Southern Ports said cruise visits across its southern regions have a multi‑million‑dollar economic impact, with each call providing an opportunity for local businesses, tour operators and regional attractions to showcase their offerings.
The authority’s cruise season data highlights the scale of the upcoming program: 21 cruise ships, 22,000 visitors and 60% maiden visits across Albany, Bunbury and Esperance.
Mr Wilks said the new cultural welcome sign would provide a lasting greeting for thousands of passengers throughout the season.
“Logistically we can’t welcome every vessel with its own cultural ceremony, so the sign stands as a lasting welcome to passengers visiting the magnificent Great Southern,” he said.
