A STRIKE is underway at the Coode Island Bulk Liquids facility as an industrial dispute has escalated between the company, Quantem and the United Workers Union.
The workers downed tools at 12.01am on Wednesday, part of a series of protected action stoppages that are set to last until Tuesday and possibly beyond.
Workers also deployed a picket near the entrance to the site where they were supported by members of other unions.
Trucks were nonetheless able to enter and exit the site.
Workers have also raised the issue of the use of non-union labour during the dispute.
The action is part of an ongoing dispute that DCN previously reported in early September, with the union seeking improvements in its new enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) including pay rises (a pushed 4% or inflation-linked rise), rostering protections and safety.
During the September strikes, Quantem said it implemented contingency plans to minimise any potential impact on customers.
“Quantem’s ongoing focus remains on providing a safe operating environment at the facility.”
