US Navy sailor missing in Timor Sea

A SEARCH is under way for a missing crewman from aircraft carrier the USS George Washington in the Timor Sea during Talisman Sabre 2025 exercises.

The sailor was reported missing on Monday afternoon and according to the US Naval Institute is believed to have gone overboard.

The Carrier Strike Group, including USS Robert Smalls, USS Shoup, and helicopter squadrons HSC-12 and HSM-78, continues search-and-rescue operations.

Australian Defence Force and Border Force assets, including RAAF Poseidon aircraft and ADV Cape Otway — are supporting the search for the sailor whose identity has not been released.

Talisman Sabre 2025, is a multinational military exercise involving 43,000 personnel from 19 countries, including Australia, the US, UK, and India.

The exercise which runs from 13 July to 4 August includes live-fire drills, amphibious landings and joint air-maritime operations has continued.

This is the first patrol for George Washington since returning to Japan in late 2024 after a multi-year overhaul.
