A NEW online application portal for near coastal certificates of competency has been launched by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

The ‘myAMSA’ portals is intended to allow seafarers to apply online from anywhere and anytime.

AMSA executive director of Operations, Michael Drake, said the portal would save seafarers from having to travel to a post office to apply for a near coastal ticket.

“We’re committed to being a modern regulator, and that means providing simple and effective digital solutions for our customers,” Mr Drake said.

“myAMSA is an online application portal which will save seafarers time and streamline the application process for near coastal tickets.”

According to the regulator, myAMSA allows near coastal seafarers to start, save, submit and track an application—including receiving SMS or email status updates as it progresses—entirely online, giving them more control and visibility of the process than ever before.

“If you were standing in line at the post office and realised you had forgotten part of your supporting documentation for a near coastal application, you would have to travel home to get it,” Mr Drake said.

“With myAMSA, you can save an incomplete application and return to where you left off, so there is no time lost if you need to source missing supporting documentation and come back to it later to submit the completed application.”

The myAMSA portal uses the Australian government’s ‘myID’ digital ID app to securely verify their identity.

It is managed by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and is used to verify identity for many other government services.

“All you need to get started with myAMSA is a myID account. Once you log into your myAMSA account, you’ll get your own unique AMSA ID,” Mr Drake said.

Existing seafarers with near coastal tickets already have AMSA ID.

“I’d encourage all existing near coastal seafarers to log into myAMSA today and set up their notification preferences—you can even choose to receive reminders from myAMSA about upcoming renewals,” Mr Drake said.
