MISSION to Seafarers Sydney has raised $2904 for seafarers via its Father’s Day Appeal.
According to organisers, this included a $1000 donation from a new donor following coverage in Daily Cargo News.
The funds were raised via a raffle and an auction.
During the next two weeks, the Mission is aiming to give a pair of socks to more than 850 seafarers visiting Sydney, a small gift, but also an opportunity for chaplains to check in with seafarers who are spending Father’s Day a long way from their children, fathers and families.
The Mission has offered its thanks to Svitzer Australia for donating two fabulous tug boat trips.
The auction winner was a Newcastle schoolteacher who said she chose to bid because she loves watching tugboats on the harbour with her husband and wanted to see them up close.
She was also happy to support the Mission because, as a schoolteacher, she had taken students to visit the Newcastle Mission and they had helped to make toiletry gift bags for seafarers and learned about how hard their lives could be.
Donations to the appeal are still open until this Sunday, Father’s Day, as the Mission seeks to raise more funds to give out socks on the 30 ships their chaplains are planning to visit in the next two weeks – before and after Father’s Day.
