LINER company CMA CGM says it is working with Conservation Volunteers New Zealand (CVNZ) as part of the Restoring Papakura project, a scheme aimed at restoring Papakura Stream via tree planting.
Since 2023, the New Zealand CMA CGM and CEVA teams have participated in multiple tree plantings along the waterway and the overall goal is to plant 42,000 native trees, shrubs and grasses across the catchment.
The Papakura Stream is a 63 km freshwater stream in South Auckland that flows into the Manukau Harbour via the Pāhurehure Inlet.
While the harbour remains a highly productive ecosystem supporting diverse marine life and bird populations, the Papakura Stream faces ecological pressures.
CMA CGM says it stepped in to support CVNZ in their project to help revitalise the stream, which has unfortunately suffered from heavy pollution.
The Restoring Papakura project seeks to significantly improve water quality, rehabilitate habitats for native species and reduce the damaging impacts downstream on the Manukau Harbour through the implementation of water monitoring systems and planting of thousands of trees along the stream banks.
The CMA CGM team planted 1180 natives at Donald’s Farm in 2023, 758 trees at Emblings Farm in 2024 and 750 trees at Chamberlain Farm in 2025.
Additionally, earlier this year, the CMA CGM/CEVA teams participated in a corporate competition called the Tree Planting Challenge.
Teams from eight companies, including Accenture, Spirax Sarco, IAG, Go Well Consulting Ltd, Concentrix, Lion, and QBE Insurance, planted native species along the Papakura Stream.
The CMA CGM team of eight planted 539 trees.
This effort earned us a strong second place on the leaderboard, behind Accenture who were crowned the challenge winners.
CMA CGM says it is proud to support Conservation Volunteers New Zealand in their mission to protect the health of the Papakura Stream, home to many native species including eels, inanga, banded kōkopu, bellbirds and our project mascot, the kākā bird.
“Since partnering up with CVNZ in 2023 for our first tree planting session, we have contributed a total of 3,455 trees to this project, and we’re incredibly proud to have the capacity to work with such an impactful company, who has a passion for caring for our planet—like us,” said CMA CGM general manager in New Zealand Magda Munro.
“We are extremely proud to be a part of this project with Conservation Volunteers New Zealand. The Kākā is an iconic native bird of New Zealand that has unfortunately become endangered due to habitat loss from deforestation.
“Through working with CVNZ, we are working together to rebuild homes for the Kākā, an effort that we believe is so crucial in order to ensure that Kakas continue to thrive for generations to come.”
Ms Munro said by working with the experts at CVNZ, they were ensuring that the steps taken to save native species habitat, including the Kākā, would guarantee a lasting impact.
“We look forward to the native plants we’ve planted flourish and restore native habitats for our beautiful wildlife,” Ms Munro said.
